Last week was the ‘inaugral’ opening of this segment – and it proved a popular one!! However compared to this week, last’s week ‘Couch Capitanos’ was about as important as checking whether Mark Nicoski’s price had risen or fallen. It’s finals time, aka Crunch Time and only really one thing now that can make the difference between a DT premiership and DT First round knockout – Your beloved Captain………..
Geelong vs Melbourne
Last time these two met it was a huge DT scoring game. Joel Corey though seems the best pick of the bunch as he is in just amazing form at the moment, averaging an incredible 125 over the last five games. Last time against the Dees he pulled a great 130 from the hat and i would expect him to follow suit. The only thing that may just change my mind is Gary Ablett Jnr’s return, with Corey not scoring so well with Gablett beside him. However, i think his form is just too good right now and deserves to be one of the first selected captains. Risk Factor = 10% – will get 100 and probably alot more
With Gary Ablett Jnr back, you’ll see thousands of Coaches keenly give him the Big C. But once again, my injury rule, which states that you never pick a player who has missed more than two weeks, comes into play. Geelong may just wrap him in cotton wool and give him more time on the bench. Risk Factor = 50% – ok he’s a gun but i don’t think he’ll get that 150 you’ll dream of. Then again it is Gary Ablett……
Jimmy Bartel is making Joel Corey’s form look bad though. Over the last 5 weeks he has accumlated an average of 132.8 . Now is clearly the in – form player at the moment and is averaging at 111 for the year. Clocked up a fantastic 125 last time against the Dees and i expect the trend to continue. Risk Factor =10% – will be among the most seletced captains again.
Carlton vs Port Adelaide
Nick Stevens is definately a no go here. Got the Kane Cornes tag and really struggled only amassing 70 points. Marc Murphy on the other hand is in some nice form nowadays and is a very viable option. Scored a great 125 points last time and looks pretty good. Risk Factor = 25% – can be unpredictable but in good nick.
Kane Cornes has a great record against Carlton in the past and i expect him to pull out a biggy. He’s fairly good form as well, scoring an average of 113.6 in his last 5. He’ll probably go tag Nick Stevens but don’t worry about his score. Last time he scored 134 and 126 the time before that . Risk Factor =15% – A very good captain choice
Brisbane vs Hawthorn
Sam Mitchell is racking them up at the moment and looks a good option having scored 105 and 116 in his last two. Last time against the Lions he dominated the midfield collecting 32 touches and 127 DT points. In good form, but due to his mental inability to kick over handball he probably won’t get a big score you really want. Risk Factor = 15% – will get 100 but will also leave many coaches expecting more.
My big boy Buddy Franklin gave Couch Capitanos the perfect start with a huge 139 last week. And this week i think you must consider him again. Last time against the Lions he destroyed Merrett to kick 8.6 and pull out 127 big points. And if you want more proof, the time before he kicked 5.2 and got 109. Lions have no logical match up and Buddy runs wild. Risk Factor = 25% – no logical match up and may just have ‘one of those days’ where everything goes in.
Collingwood vs St Kilda
Nick Riewoldt should be able to bounce back after a disappointing back but doesn’t have history on his side (74 last time ) i was concerned with the lack of ball coming his way last week. Collingwood will be tougher and though he may stand up when the Saints need him and just wonder about his potential. Risk Factor = 50% – doesn’t have the history or the service but could fire up for a biggy…..rather you than me though……
Dane Swan had a poor match for his standards last week but he is a DT gun and should bounce back with a 100+ score this week. Swanny doesn’t tend to hit the highs of 140 or 150 but will consistently float around that 100-130 mark. Having said that he scored 136 last time against the Saints and looks a good option here. Risk Factor = 10% – will get back up to 100+ this week easy but that may be it
Sydney vs Fremantle
NEXT!!!!!
Matthew Pavlich if i had to. In good form and scored WAIT! Leo Barry could be back this week for Sydney and crushed Pav last time for just 70. And now that Freo midfielders are dropping like flies and the fact that Sydney are the ‘Shutdown’ Kings i’d look elsewhere as Pav will have no supply, no ball, no points.
Last time THREE players scored over 90. NO WAY!
Kangaroos vs Western Bulldogs
The Doggies have been disappointing of late and the Kangas have no one i’d consider true Captain material so this game is a bit of a stinker in that respect. Adam Cooney and Jason Akermanis tore it up last time but their form at the moment is horrible. As is Robert Murphy and Daniel Cross. There are a lot of better captains out there right now….
Adelaide vs Richmond
Matthew Richardson scored 97 last time and could be a fairly safe bet of making the ton, but he does have an injury cloud hovering menacingly over his head. But last time Richo still scored just under 100 in a team that lost by 50 points. Hopefully if the Tigers can be right up there with a chance of winning as many expect them to, Richo will star and could rake in the DT scores. Risk Factor = 20% – don’t like that Injury Cloud
Scott Thompson however is the pick of the bunch here. Scored 126 last time, kicking 6.1 for the day. Scored 100 last week and looks to be back in form and should deliver. Last time Shane Tuck tried to go with him and got owned so they may try something else. But i don’t think it will effect Scotty….Risk Factor = 20% – just a little up and down of late but still a proven gun
West Coast vs Essendon
Some popular choices here come under some considerable scrutiny. Brent Stanton got tagged by Selwood last time but still dominated for 128 but then again could be worked over a little harder this time. Risk Factor = 40% – could dominate but i still just don’t trust him
Dean Cox is a no go here because for some reason he struggles against David Hille. Coxy scored 82 last time and didn’t look comfortable and for that reason shouldn’t be considered as Captain. On the other hand David Hille played the perfect game – 22 hitouts, 27 disposals and 3 goals for 133 points. Yes Hille is a risk but if thats the difference between winning or losing your final, taking the biggest risks. Risk Factor = 60% – Not a captain material plus he’s playing the best ruckmen in the league – but for some reason dominates and could be a shock 130 maker – but rather you than me…..
Last week the Top 3 Average for Pom’s Pick was…..
137.33
This week the Top 5 are…
-
Jimmy Bartel
-
Buddy Love
-
Kane Cornes
-
Joel Corey
-
Dane Swan

guys this has nothing to do with captains but im going to ask it anyway. If Ablett plays should i take Simon black off and leave Valenti on? blacks scores have been down recently and Valenti’s have been in the 80’s.
Cerrtainly is a tough decision, i face a similar one with adam goodes and bradd dalzeill. i spose you try and get as much info on both teams and players then make the decision as late as possible (friday)
If i was you, i would definately play Black ahead of Valenti. I know black has been down, but he is a gun and will not keep scoring 50’s for the rest of the year. Valenti is scoring well but hes young and susceptible to inconsistency.
Great seg tommy
thanks for that. now my second question is i have 1 trade left and $9,000 in the bank, and my team looking like this.
backline: ellis, mcleod, kennelly, fisher and king( if he keeps his spot)
not playing backline players:s.d.thompson,j.edwards , osborne(hopefully will be back) and shaw
midfeild:goodwin, black, ablett, green, stevens, mitchell with cotchin and valenti on the bench
ruck: sandilands and cox with mumford and j.tippet(both of them wont get games)
forward line: deledio,fev,b.johnson.j.brown
not playing:j.morton.j.kennedy,porp,burton and chapman.
with all that who do u think i should trade in?
thanks for the advise dj but what do u think about black with his injury complants? his been 50/50 for the past 2 weeks in think to play that is the only thing worrying me
with one trade left dyl, dont trade if you dont have to! if your loooking at winning the grand final in your league then an injury in round 21 could mean that a trade would be very useful then.
mmm i guess the only player i can think of getting is shaw out for guerra.but with 5zeros this week i dont like my chances in the finals. started so well but screwed up a few weeks about and drop to about 8,500 in ranking from 2,500. i guess i can look forward to next years dt
difficult choice this week coz i really wanna beat gaz, gonna spend a lot of time making sure i choose the right guy…and of course im not gonna post who i choose either, keep him guessing.
Haha look at you all trying to be all secretive
I’m going Corey
Or Buddy
Or Marc Murphy
Obviously i’m not telling……haha
or maybe Kane
or Riewoldt
or Scott Thompson
or David Hille
You just don’t know do you D-Rat????
JE
Also for anyone still wondering who owns Buddy Franklin
- he’s playing at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ – Dream Teams that is!!!
-no seriously he’s playing at the big points getting ground in the AFL – Aurora in Tassie
Big Big chance for all hell to break loose
pom do u have scott thompson? give him the big (C) he will dominate for sure!! Doctor DJ gives he Guarantee:) (guarantee not valid unless player performs well)
Seriously though, Scottie T will Tear It Up
shhh Dec i’m bluffing
But don’t tell………
you dont even have any of the last 4 you mentioned tom
Looking forward to ‘Buddy Good Updates’ DJ Sat night?
Er……yeah i do………there just not in my team yet…….
Did someone just hear a rumour………….?
Wait was that?…………………..
Pom has none of the players he mentioned…………..
is it true……………..do you believe……….
do you have buddy now?
what have your trades been?
Not a mass fan of the couch capitanos logo pom.
maybe…..maybe not…..;)
yeah could do with an improvement…….
What does everyone else think?
Taking a gamble and putting Richo as cpatain this week!
……funny……i heard different……..
….guess i just heard………
…..a rumour about Buddy or Joel Corey………….
……..and rigging the teams in order to get a win………
….mmm….not sure i believe you there gaz but it shouldn’t matter i have connections and people that you think you can trust stabbing you in the back, i’ll find out soon enough…lol
and tom i just logged into your account to check if you have buddy and you dont. d-rat, i have toms password stored in my computer so how much money are you willing to pay me to edit toms team just before lockout…could be handy come this weekends final eh?
Oh crap
It’s all over
very smooth marcus!
it could be very tempting if i come up against you in next weeks final… your dt hopes are in my hands, i could really bribe you with this tom
kane captain
mitch vice
pom u must have a shit team if ure go 2 captain is always buddy
Ben, captain buddy provided a handy 138 last week, im gonna argue with that. This segment has only been going two weeks so i dont reckon you could make too many judgements about going buddy everyweek when youve only seen us go him for two rounds.
oi ben, pom doesnt even have buddy in his team so stick to commenting on your own team instead of trying to pay out others…
oh sorry ben didn’t realise 139 was a bad score…
and BTW i don’t even have Buddy – my ‘go-to’ is Joel Corey
hahaha i dont think ben will be posting again in this 1. =)
Yeah benny mate, Pom’s captains article isnt about which player is going to be his captain it’s about giving the best possible info and prediction on who will be the best player as captain. Last week he advised buddy and he got 139, not bad if you ask me.
Marcus you’ll be lucky to get through week 1 of finals with the team you’ve got!
looks like someones on the defensive there gaz…. we all know your showering your pants about losing to someone that is in their first year of dt, youve got everything to lose…
well thats simply because i have everything marcus! youve got nothing to lose becasue you’ve got nothing! (no freinds, dignity, dt respect etc.) haha. In all seriousness but Marcus this weeks game between you and myself should be a ripper, so i wish you the best of luck…….you’ll need it!
i agree, definate game of the round for our league. gonna be a close one… who you trading in this week for heater (you can tell me coz i dont have any trades left so i wont be able to do anything shifty)
are you saying me vs D-Rat won’t be huge??
Yeh agree with palmer there, palmer fc vs oozing potential is the game of the round with the loser eliminated from the comp. umm not totally sure about the heath shaw trade, i’ll leave it till the last minute then make the move.
Well well well – 40 comments for a post
-think that blows the old record out of the water
Pretty spot on I think Pom – although I agree with a bloke earlier about Buddy – take the sure things in the midfield mate, who knows what Buddy Love is going to bring to the table points wise!
If you have Bartel, Corey or Kane Cornes and go for someone else this week I think you’re a couple of pots further along than the Shaw boys on a Sunday night!

Yeh Tristan, Choosing Buddy as a cappy as we all know is no sure thing! But can pay off big time. A little more Strategy may come into Captains in finals, If you reckon you may need a miracle to win one of your finals matches, Budd’s an option.
But yeh, to those fella’s with Cornes and Bartel in particular, you would have to have a bloody good reason to go against them this week!
HURRRY UP AND GET A NEW SEGMENT!
