After some radical surgery by some french surgeon who used state-of-the-art industrial strength synthetic fibre technology to fix his knee ACL, Swans back Nick Malceski could be rocking up probably within the next two weeks (see Doctor DJ’s injury report for more news). So what does this mean? Malceski was the swans B+F in 2007, one of the most improved DT players of 2007 and finished the year with a good average of 86. Seeing the backline ‘crisis’ in DT this year (injuries to Chad Cornes, Brett Thorton, Joel Bowden dropped etc) he may have been a slight saviour in the making as he brings in another top line backmen who can certainly rack them up.
He is good option for sure, but possibly the biggest issue is how it affects the swans backline. Tadhg Kennelly and Martin Mattner have been very heavily selected and are racking up plenty of points for their price, but with the return of Malceski one of them is in danger. I don’t think that it will be Kennelly because Paul Roos rates him very highly and he is one of the swans best, if not one the game’s best (hence Dream Team Vs Vics selection). Malceski’s return won’t affect him because he can hold his place in the team. If anything, he scores will go up because he and Malceski will have that lovely DT situation of chipping it around on the half back line, getting plenty of cheapies.
Martin Mattner on the otherhand was pushed into Malceski’s role and now Nicky’s back Mattner will play less of a role in the backline-which potentially means less touches. It does depend on where Roos plays Mattner but my thoughts are that Mattner will have less of an influence and his scores will drop.
Any thoughts?

mmmm…you have done your research, well done Pom! I agree with you, Mattner could take a hit with a Malceski return.
this might be completely wrong but i think that malceski may play a different role to that of last year… sydneys defence is once again the best in the league whereas they are often getting beaten in the middle of the gorund. We might see nick moving further up the ground to help out in this area meaning kennely and mattner are playing their usual roles. This could also boost malceski’s scores up to an average of high 90s. Just made that up on the spot but could be a great solution in DT sense. Any thoughts?
serious?
if he does would be awesome – Mattner + Tadhg will be keep their scores and places and Malceski will indeed rack them up. The midfield isn’t that weak though – and i think if anyone it will be kennelly that they move in field – on the wing maybe because of his awesome speed?
yeah but until last season malceski’s prime position was in the centre…last year’s DT had him as a midfielder and he has the experience to play there. (remember this is just a made up thoery, dont qoute me)
yeah i don’t think that malceski will play centre – just found a quote from Paul Roos saying:
“Just imagine it, the half back line of Kennelly, Malceski and Mattner – that’s why we traded for Mattner”
Love your research Pom, Love all your work Pom, Actually, Love you in general.
yeah there goes my theory… at least paul roos is saying he’ll play them all instead of mentioning only two of them. its wierd that sydneys defence limits scoring so much considering how attacking their defensive line up is
yeah its weird
-but that means a lot of chipping around the back line and runs forward from the half backs which is what we want to see!!!!
Cheap possies!!!!
good post pom, malceski another player who slots into the third year rule, better not give that away though, its gonna be the best post yet when its released later this week, stay tuned:)
yeh good plan DJ hold the secret 3 year rule for a week, we will prob have to release it again before the start of next year but.
isn’t this just a rip off of the dt-talk article on the weekend?
hey and make sure its called
‘Pom’s third year rule’
Cause its mine!!!
